Intimate Waxing – What’s it all about?
We frequently get asked questions about Intimate Waxing. Here is some more information explaining what it is, why you may choose to have it, how to prepare for it and what you can expect on the day.
Let’s start with the different bikini waxing option available.
There are four different options available, ranging from the standard bikini line to the most advanced Hollywood. The dark area in the diagrams shows the hair that is left at the end of the treatment. With a Brazilian or Hollywood, this will include the bum cheeks and between the buttocks as well. This is the norm and our qualified therapists will ensure you are put at ease as much as possible and advised of the best positions to be in for us to achieve the best result.
For a standard bikini line or an extended bikini, you can choose between warm wax and hot wax.
For a Brazilian or Hollywood wax, we always use hot wax.
What is hot wax and why is it best for a Brazilian or Hollywood wax?
Hot wax and warm wax are quite different. Hot wax is applied to the skin in a thick layer. The wax sticks to the hair but not the skin. It is left to harden for a minute or two and then ‘flicked’ off without the use of a cotton or fabric strip. Warm wax is applied using a tube of wax and removed with cloth strips. Our warm wax is applied using disposable heads to ensure the highest standards of hygiene.
Preparation for a Brazilian or Hollywood waxing treatment
Preparation begins at least 10 days prior to you coming to the salon. We need the hair to be ideally 1 cm in length. It can be longer than this and your therapist will trim it if necessary so don’t feel you need to do any of that at home beforehand. Too long is much better than too short!
We also recommend exfoliating the area using a gentle body scrub. If possible try and do this every other day in the week before your treatment. Exfoliating will remove any dead skin and help to ‘lift’ the hairs away from the epidermis (the top layer of skin), allowing them to be more easily picked up by the wax.
The day of your appointment
Before your first treatment, you’ll be asked to fill in a thorough consultation form, so it’s a good idea to bring a list of any medications you are taking. You’d be surprised what can affect your skin’s sensitivity, so it’s best to be as honest as possible. We understand that people feel a little nervous before these treatments and are worried about it being embarrassing. Please be assured that all of our therapists have experienced Brazilian and Hollywood waxes themselves as part of their training so they do understand and will do everything possible to put you at your ease and you can ask them any questions as we have probably been asked them all before!
Once in the treatment room, you will be required to remove your underwear for a Brazilian and Hollywood bikini wax. This makes it easier for the therapist and allows them to ensure that all hair is removed. Your therapist will explain what to do and where to bend or stretch the skin etc. Our therapists are fully trained in asking you to position yourself in the best way to enable us to remove hair as quickly and comfortably as possible.
At the end of the treatment, we apply a soothing cream to help reduce inflammation.
After your treatment
It is best to arrange to exercise or swim before your treatment as it should be avoided for 24 hours afterwards. Sweat and chlorine can both increase the likelihood of open follicles becoming infected.
When should I have my waxing?
We are often asked is there a good time in the month to have your waxing and the answer is yes! The best time is mid-cycle as we all seem to be much more tolerant of the discomfort at this point. However, we can and do wax during your period and again this is something our therapists have done and know how to deal with.
So what are you waiting for?
If you’ve ever considered trying a Brazilian or Hollywood hot wax, please don’t let the fear of pain or embarrassment prevent you from trying it! Wax technology and techniques have been advanced and refined, and we often have clients tell us it was a lot better than they expected. You may even find that you are willing to throw away the razors or hair removal cream for good!
